PAMLA Presents: A Trip to Chicano Park (Barrios Logan) San Diego, CA

Please join us for a tour of and lecture about Chicano Park. There will be a complimentary bus from the Wyndham San Diego Bayside to Chicano Park, leaving the Wyndham on Sunday, November 17 at 11:40 am, 12:10 pm, and 12:35 pm, and returning following the lecture, which will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 pm.

Chicano Park artist-scholar Mario Torero will discuss his experiences of Chicano Park, including his work on its founding and his and other artists’ murals. Following the lecture, participants can view the murals and/or get something to eat at a nearby restaurant. The bus will leave Chicano Park to return PAMLA participants to the Wyndham at 1:45 pm, 2:20 pm, 2:50 pm, and 3:20 pm. Chicano Park is the geographic and emotional heart of Barrio Logan, located in Logan Heights, San Diego’s oldest Mexican-American neighborhood. The park is home to the largest concentration of Chicano murals in the world with more than 80 paintings on seven acres dotted with murals, sculptures, and gardens.

We are also showcasing a special session dedicated to Chicano Park called “San Diego’s Chicano Park as Chicana/o/x Aleph” which takes place just before our trip on Sunday at 10:00am in Pacific D. Poet and scholar Juan Delgado will present on the murals of Chicano Park, as well as fasciliate a discussion between himself, Liliana Conlisk Gallegos, and Mario Torero on the cultural, historical, aesthetic, political, and spiritual significance of the art park. We would love to have you come to both events on Sunday to celebrate San Diego, Logan Heights, and the diverse voices of Chicano Park that, we hope, inspires the values of our PAMLA community.

If you can, please make a reservation for the bus. Log into pamla.ballastacademic.com and click on the Membership & registration tab, and then add the Chicano Park excursion option to your events. You can make a donation, if you wish, but you do not need to (put 0 in if you wish to pay nothing).

We hope to see you soon at Chicano Park!
