The Catherine Montfort French Studies Fund

The Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), a non-profit American humanities association established in 1903 and the Pacific Coast affiliate of the Modern Language Association, is proud to announce the establishment of the Catherine Montfort French Scholarship Fund. Established through the extraordinary generosity of Professor Catherine R. Montfort, and supported by the continued donations of PAMLA members, this fund enables the association to offer scholarships to select graduate students and international scholars presenting papers at the annual conference.

Thanks to the generous donations of many PAMLA members, we are able to offer a number of scholarships to select graduate students presenting papers at the annual conference.

  • The Catherine Montfort International French Scholarship assists one or more French scholars, authors, or artists based outside the United States attending and presenting at the annual PAMLA conference.
  • The Catherine Montfort French Graduate Student Scholarship provides support to graduate students in French studies who are presenting at the conference.

Applicants must be current members of PAMLA at the time of application.

Catherine R. Montfort is Professor of French and Women’s and Gender Studies at Santa Clara University. Born in Marseille, France, she received her PhD from Stanford University and has been a dedicated member of PAMLA for many years. Her service to the organization includes serving as PAMLA President (2003–2004), as a member of the Executive Committee, as a long-time organizer and presiding officer of Women in French sessions, and as Conference Host in 2001.

A distinguished scholar of French literature and culture, Professor Montfort is the author of several books and more than forty articles and chapters on major figures including Madame de Sévigné, Madame de Staël, Simone de Beauvoir, Annie Ernaux, and others. She has also served as editor of Simone de Beauvoir Studies, Pacific Coast Philology, and Women in French Studies, and has edited numerous volumes and special issues on French and Francophone women’s writing, culture, and history.

Through her longstanding scholarly contributions, editorial leadership, and dedicated service to PAMLA, Professor Montfort has made a lasting impact on the field of French studies. Her generosity in establishing this fund ensures continued support for emerging scholars and strengthens international engagement within the organization.
