PAMLA 2026 Excursions: MOPOP

Trade the conference hall for guitars, monsters, and indie games! On this self-guided visit, you wander the Museum of Pop Culture’s (MOPOP) galleries of music, science fiction, fantasy, horror, and gaming at your own pace: no docent, no schedule, no Q&A, so come enjoy it with some PAMLA friends!

About MOPOP

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen opened the museum in 2000 as the Experience Music Project. It has since grown into the Museum of Pop Culture, a nonprofit museum that treats pop culture as something worth collecting, studying, and celebrating. Its collection runs to more than 80,000 artifacts across over ten exhibitions. The building makes its own argument: Frank Gehry reportedly took inspiration from sliced-up electric guitars, and his rippling red, gold, blue, purple, and silver structure sits at the foot of the Space Needle, with the monorail gliding straight through it. At $15.50, PAMLA attendees pay roughly half of regular adult admission.

Getting there

Your getaway starts at the hotel door, and you choose the route. Stroll about 25 minutes from the Hyatt, or walk a few blocks to the Westlake Center Monorail station at 5th Avenue and Pine Street and ride the Alweg monorail to Seattle Center. It drops you right beside MOPOP. Check the Seattle Center Monorail website for schedules and fares. Admission does not include the fare. Please arrange your own transportation to and from the museum. Feel free to stay on after the visit ends and keep exploring, within museum hours.

Please arrive on time. Everyone enters together through MOPOP’s group entrance, so build in time for the walk or the monorail and arrive by 11:30 a.m. on Friday or 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the latest. Latecomers risk missing the group entry. Meet at the North Group Entrance, at the Harrison Street turnaround on the silver side of the building. Look for the words North Group Entrance and the doors beneath the covered awning. Once the group checks in and hears a quick orientation, the museum is yours!
