PAMLA 2024 Events
PAMLA Welcome Event and Keynote Address
Please join us for the PAMLA Conference Welcome, 11:30 to 11:55 am in the Crosby Ballroom B, for a welcome to the conference by PAMLA President Juan Delgado and Carolyn Horsman, a board member of the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center, a Banning, California non-profit dedicated to saving and sharing the indigenous native cultures of Southern California. Carolyn will welcome everyone to the conference and the region, and read a passage from Dorothy Ramon’s Wayta’ Yawa’, as well as share a story about the life of Dorothy Ramon, an elder in traditional ways of the Serrano people.
Then stay for the PAMLA Keynote Address “Translations/Transnations/Transmogrifications: An Interactive Poetry Reading and Discussion of New Poems and Best Hits,” featuring Marilyn Chin. Chin will open the PAMLA conference with an interactive poetry reading, selecting work from her new book Sage and from her best hits album…with a special focus on translation. This event will take place on Thursday, November 7, from 11:55 am -12:50 pm, in the Crosby Ballroom B, immediately following the Conference Welcome. Marilyn Chin is an award-winning poet and author, professor emeritus of San Diego State University, and a self-professed “activist, subversive, radical, immigrant, feminist, transnational Buddhist neoclassical poet…and an inventor of a fusionist esthetics of bilingual and bicultural hybrid forms.”
ANUJA: A Short Film About Childhood, Labor, and Resilience
Please join writer, director Adam Graves on Thursday, November 7 from 6:50 to 7:50 pm in the Crosby Ballroom B for a screening and discussion of his short, award-winning fictional film ANUJA, the story of a bright 9-year-old girl who works with her older sister at a back-alley garment factory in Delhi, India. The film explores themes of child labor and child resilience, girls’ education and the bond between sisters. Light refreshments will be served.
Calaca Art Workshop
Celebrate Días de Muertos (Days of the Dead) by making your own calaca. Join PAMLA artist-in-residence Xavier Cázares Cortéz for our calaca art workshop, where you can create a beautiful two-dimensional or three-dimensional craft that honors the dearly departed. The artist will guide you how to make your own calaca— a colloquial Mexican Spanish name for skull or skeleton (usually human). This free, drop-in art workshop will provide all materials. First come, first served while supplies last.
Day of the Dead Celebration – Días de Muertos Art Tertulia and Celebration
Get into the spirit of Días de Muertos (Days of the Dead) by joining us for a conversation with artist-in-residence Xavier Cázares Cortéz. The ancient Días de Muertos is a highly celebrated and significant holiday held throughout Mexico and most recently in the United States. During the two days, homage is paid to the dearly departed with the assembly of ofrendas (altars), offerings of food and drink, and in some cases prayers. Participants will tour the onsite ofrenda constructed by the artist specifically for our conference. This cultural conversation will offer an engaging perspective about life and death, helping us to accept and even to laugh at our most primal fears about our own mortality. We will close out this session by inviting participants to read aloud the names of dearly departed family and friends. Immediately followed by Latin American snacks and music, featuring the local San Bernadino band, Porkboii.
PAMLA Sunday Brunch
Please join us for our PAMLA General Membership Meeting and complimentary Sunday brunch, including exciting announcements concerning the sites of future PAMLA conferences, new officers, scholarship recipients, and PAMLA awards.
“La Poética del Lugar”: A Conversation with Three Local Artists at The Elemental: A Contemporary Center for the Arts in Palm Springs
Please join us for our PAMLA 2024 Conference Closing Event at The Elemental: A Contemporary Center for the Arts in Palm Springs (800 Vella Rd Unit #D, Palm Springs, CA 92264, a brief car ride from the Margaritaville Resort). The Elemental co-founder and artist Cristopher Cichocki will lead us on a tour of the center, discussing its current exhibition: The Gaia Hypothesis Chapter Two: Palm Trees Also Die. PAMLA President, poet, and artist Juan Delgado will join PAMLA Artist-in-Residence Xavier Cázares Cortéz in an informal discussion of local arts and culture, and their own art practices. Light snacks will be served. https://www.theelemental.org/
