Women in French II: La représentation des femmes dans la peinture française de David à Picasso (The Representation of Women in French Paintings from David to Picasso)

Presiding Officer:
Catherine Montfort, Santa Clara University

Teaching literature without including the arts seems to be inadequate in 21st century America. After all, cave paintings preceded writing by about 27000 years and showed us how important paintings can be to the understanding of culture. This session invites scholars to develop papers including French artists such as David, Delacroix, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Modigliani, Picasso …but also French women artists such as Vigée Lebrun, Labille-Guiard, Mary Cassat, Berthe Morisot… Of particular interest would be presentations detailing how to teach with paintings. Or the role of paintings in literary texts or films.
