116th Annual Conference - Bellingham, Washington
Friday, November 9 - Sunday, November 11, 2018

Poetry and Poetics

Presiding Officer:
Brian Reed, University of Washington

We are open to a wide range of paper topics dealing with poetics, but are particularly interested in papers that engage with the special conference theme of "Acting, Roles, Stages." As such, papers dealing with issues such as acting as art and metaphor, theories of role play and theatricality, and conceptions of the world stage and the public audience, in connection to the session's topic of poetics, are particularly welcome.

Possible topics could also include, but are not limited to: styles of acting across time and media; naturalist or anti-realist techniques of performance and stagecraft; the staging of everyday life; social roles and role play (e.g., Goffman's presentation of self in everyday life); performativity and technologies of mediation; the (non)performance of verse drama; dramatic monologues and persona poems in/as performance; the poetry reading as a variety of theater; poets as/and playwrights.
