Performing Empathy: When Literary Texts Are Acts of Kindness

Scholars such as Arlie Russell Hochschild observe that sympathy fatigue is often cited, rightly or not, as one reason for the social division in post-2016 America. If, as Emanuele Castano suggests, certain types of literature improve one’s capacity for empathy, how can literature perform an act of kindness?
