116th Annual Conference - Bellingham, Washington
Friday, November 9 - Sunday, November 11, 2018

Los Angeles (co-sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Los Angeles at Occidental College)

Presiding Officer:
Jeremiah Axelrod, Institute for the Study of Los Angeles, Occidental College

The Institute for the Study of Los Angeles (ISLA) is proud to sponsor a new session on “Los Angeles.” As the title implies, we are looking for papers that provide critical insight or scholarship on greater Los Angeles (and Southern California more generally) in scholarly discourse or media depiction (literature, film, television, games, graphic novels, etc.).

We hope to encourage presentations in multiple disciplines, treating a wide variety of topics and genres, such as poetry, literature, architecture, movie making, public spaces, public amusements, cultural practices and changes, transportation, and urban planning; various peoples and subcultures and their interactions; depictions of urban Southern California in the past or present; performances of identities and identity shifts, including race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, and gender; or just about any other topic pertinent to the region.

In order to encourage early-career scholars and support diverse and inclusive discourse on this increasingly important topic, ISLA will subvent conference registration fees for all graduate students accepted to present in the session (so if you are accepted to the session and deliver a paper, be sure to let ISLA Director Jeremiah Axelrod know so he can arrange for your reimbursement).
