116th Annual Conference - Bellingham, Washington

Japanese Visual Culture from Kowai to Kawaii

Presiding Officer:
David John Boyd, University of Glasgow (Scotland)

From manga, anime, and video games to fashion, print media, and the fine arts, contemporary Japanese visual culture is a vast philosophical landscape for thinking through the complexity of media ecologies, the contradictions of art histories, and the existential and postcolonial anxieties of "overcoming modernity," as Harry Harootunian writes. Hence, this session welcomes papers on all aspects of Japanese visual culture, especially those focused on this year's theme of performance, theatre, and dramatization.
