Bible Dramatized

Presiding Officer:
Leonard Koff, University of California, Los Angeles

This special session seeks papers (on works from late antiquity through the modern period) that explicitly or implicitly describe, comment on, or refer to theatrical adaptations, in whole or in part, of Jewish biblical or post-biblical texts or canonical or non-canonical Christian scriptures. For example: plays about stories from the Apocrypha (about Judith and Holofernes, for example, the subject of Jewish plays from Renaissance Italy (1489)); plays about Purim, particularly Yiddish plays; plays about Hanukkah; modern plays that take their origins from Jewish texts, or characters in the Bible, such as Moses or David or Ruth; plays from the medieval Corpus Christi cycle; medieval and modern religious dramas, such as nativity plays or plays about the life of Jesus; or plays about Church fathers or clergymen or Christian thinkers in the modern age; or plays about Jesus’s disciples, about St. Paul in particular, or about his female disciples, such as Mary Magdalene, for example.
