Gertrude Stein's Late Works

Presiding Officer:
Janet Boyd, Fairleigh Dickinson University

A session dealing with Gertrude Stein’s late works and the difference age made (or may have made) in her politics and aesthetic s.  Linda Wagner-Martin and others have pointed to Stein’s The Mother of Us All – her play/opera about Susan B. Anthony – as marking a late-life shift in Stein’s thinking about American feminism, at the same time that Brewsie and Willie reveals a new depth and dimension to Stein’s thinking about World War II.  This session would deal with these two texts and/or other approaches to Stein’s later works as political pieces.
