Recent Announcements

Proposals for the PAMLA 2013 conference were due April 15.  Several topic areas extended their deadlines to May 12, but all submissions are now closed.

If your paper has been accepted by a Presiding Officer but you did not have the opportunity to enter it online, please (1) create an account on this website and (2) send your session topic, paper title, 50 word abstract, and AV needs (none, or laptop coordinated by session chair) to webmaster@pamla.org.  We will verify with the Presiding Officer and add your proposal to the system.

Due to the large volume of proposals submitted on the day of the deadline, along with requests for password resets and new account registrations, our system periodically became overwhelmed and stopped sending emails.  Presiding Officers should login to check the actual record of submissions for their sessions.  If anyone needs help remembering their username or password, just contact webmaster@pamla.org.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is one of the side effects of a large and thriving conference!

The entire PAMLA 2013 conference will be held at the lovely Bahia Resort, on Mission Bay, in San Diego, California. We have arranged for enough rooms at the Bahia for all of our conference attendees at a very competitive rate ($129 a night plus tax), but it is possible that we could run out of rooms. So, we strongly encourage you to make your reservation well in advance. Read about rates, amenities, and reservation options on the Accommodations page.

The special theme for the 2013 PAMLA conference is “Stages of Life: Age, Identity, and Culture.” The theme is intended to allow special sessions dealing with all aspects of the intersection of Age, Identity, and Culture, from Childhood Studies to Aging Studies. Special sessions exploring the theme may explore such issues as the analysis of “age” as depicted in literary and cultural products; children’s literature, film, and culture; childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age as constructed or performed identities; the ways that literature and media depict and construct concepts of age, in much the same way that ethnic, Marxist, and gender studies explore ethnicity, class, sexuality, and gender formation.

The Forum for the conference will be on the special theme "Stages of Life: Age, Identity, and Culture."

The Presidential Address (at the Presidential Address Luncheon on Friday, November 1, 2013) will be delivered by PAMLA's 2012-2013 President, Lorely French of Pacific University.

The Plenary Address (at the Plenary Address Luncheon on Saturday, November 2, 2013) will be delivered by Professor Shelley Streeby, of the University of California, San Diego.

The Creative Artist Spotlight Speakers for this year's PAMLA Conference will be the celebrated poets Rae Armantrout and Marilyn Chin.  Armantrout and Chin will read from their poetry and discuss their work with PAMLA members on Friday evening, November 1, 2013.
