Special Topic: Violence and Represention
The 2008 PAMLA conference at Pomona College on November 7th and 8th will have as its special topic "Violence and Representation." Several sessions will be devoted to literary and philological aspects of this topic. We welcome submissions from the various fields of philological and literary study, as well as from related fields such as philosophy, history, and art history.
Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- the literature of war
- trauma theory and literary representation
- the semiotics of visual representation of violence
- the rhetoric of violence
- the representation and role of violence in sacred texts
- the work of Girard on violence and the sacred
- masculinity and violence
- the idea of strife or violence in ancient philosophy
- violence and Enlightenment
- violence in the work of Nietzsche or other modern philosophers
- violence and heroism
- representations of violence in tragedy
- genocide
- unspeakable violence
- violence in the natural world and its literary and visual representation
- the modern mass media and violence
- the aesthetics of violence
